Individuals at highest risk of zinc deficiency include:
Infants, especially premature babies, children, and adolescents;
Individuals suffering from malnutrition or anorexia nervosa;
Individuals with type I and II diabetes, diseases that increase zinc excretion in urine;
Individuals with chronic diarrhea or inflammatory and/or malabsorptive bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease or celiac disease;
Alcoholics, especially those with liver cirrhosis;
Athletes undergoing intense endurance training with heavy sweating;
Individuals treated with tetracyclines, quinolones, bisphosphonates, chelators, anticonvulsants, and diuretics;
Individuals taking iron and calcium supplements, which can significantly reduce zinc absorption;
Strict vegans consuming large amounts of grains and legumes: the phytate content in these foods interferes with zinc absorption, drastically reducing it. It is estimated that zinc requirements in these diets should be increased by 50% compared to those following omnivorous diets.
